Dollar Brand - The Journey - Chiaroscuro US 1977 1st press NM/VG+

The Journey was recorded in nonet in 1977. This LP invite to outbursts where free jazz and uncomplicated groove are mixed with South African touch. To the virtuous collective passages succeed at irregular intervals the always exemplary soloists like the stirring saxophonists Hamiett Bluiett and Carlos Ward, or trumpet Don Cherry. Long procession rocked by a tender piano vamp, the track "Hajj" where voices cut, clash and embrace is worth the detour alone. There's not much left, apart from a few notes by Dollar Brand a.k.a. Abdullah Ibrahim, to relate to in this joyous racket from which the familiar timbre of a pocket trumpet, the extremely sonorous blast of an oboe or the strange vibrations of a double bass sometimes emerge. "Hajj" is disorienting and that's good. A great record!!! Gatefold cover.
